    As his fist broke the plane of the circle a blast of fire burst out and envelopped the brain.

    The strange creature was unnerving...but not as unnerving as many of the things done to Isen in the past. His faith in his own abilities and powers allowed him to draw in breath and find his calm...and then hurl a bolt of force against the monster.

    "What did you guys get yourse...by the gods what IS that?", Phai exclaims as she rushes into the room as well.
    Without waiting for an answer, she draws an arrow and shoots at the creature.

    The flames from Child-of-Planes washed over the creature, which flinched slightly, but it didn't look particularly vulnerable to fire.

    Vincent's burst hit it a moment later, yet in an unusual display of agility, it seemed like it was dodging a fair portion of the flames. Isen's blast, on the other hand, missed entirely - as did Phai's shot as the creature's sickening, shifting shape became visible to her.

    Even as you watched, its body slowly started to repair itself, and the creature focused for a moment before sending out three Magic Missiles. Yet... something about them was off.

    Damage (Child): 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
    Damage (Isen): 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
    Damage (Vincent): 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
    Trip (Child): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
    Trip (Isen): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
    Trip (Vincent): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

    The difference became clear a moment later as all three of them were knocked prone as the spells hit with an abnormal amount of force and a thunderous roar.

    Remember, getting up is a move action that provokes.

    With a sigh of annoyance and a light groan, Isen flicked a wrist and felt more of his silver vanish to...whether his money went when he cast spells went. A Barrier appeared overhead, stopping the creature from attacking him physically as he rose back to his feet. It would have to smash the Barrier, or go around it, if it wanted to attack him.

  • Vincent clambered to his feet with his shield raised, then began a new incantation.

    As he finished, the tips of his metallic fingers split open and streams of black grease streaked up to cover the ceiling upon which the creature clung.

    Expecting this creature to put up more of a fight, after the display swiping her three companions off their feet, Phai takes a moment to study it, then aims at what she THINKS is a vulnerable part of it.

    Child saw no reason to stand back up just yet, and fired another wave of fire.

    "Any chance you want to surrender?" he asked the creature, taking a guess and speaking common.


    @Phai: You'll have to guess, I'm afraid. Or make a DC 14 Int check to figure out what category it belongs to. It's... less obvious than most creatures. XD

    The creature's mouth darted down several times - including at Isen as he worked to cast a barrier. Being prone didn't mean he was out of reach, after all.

    Despite the damage he took while casting, Child-of-Planes was able to stay focused and get his spell off, even as Vincent sent out a splatter of grease (which, unfortunately, didn't seem to be enough to get it to fall as it hung there - although it was probably in trouble if it wanted to move).

    It was also unable to avoid the fire this time... but that paled in comparison to Phai's outstanding shot (which didn't need a Surge to hit). It wasn't enough to bring the creature down, but that had definitely hurt it. Without letting up, it began hammering at Vincent again, trying to bring him down before it turned to the others.

  • Vincent reached up and touched his neck where the tendril had hit and left a slightly glowing hand print behind, then reached for the weighted stones at his belt.

    His arm cocked back, then the entire forearm started spinning at the elbow, whirling the bolas around before he let them fly.

    Isen grunted, just avoiding the tentacles, and let the barrier collapse. With another gesture he hurled more mystical force into the tentacles, infusing it with more this time.

    Whoops, forgot to cast defensively—though DR does reduce that to DC 17, and I forgot about Archmage concentration bonus. Also this guy is quite good at trip-control!

    Also it looks like I picked the wrong spirit—forgot that channeling Trickster for this fight would've let me high jump like 10'! Oh well.

    Child-of-Planes ignored the lashing and fired back, aiming another fire blast at the mass of rolling tentacles. "Let's keep this topical. Noodles al forno!" he called out again, in his archmage cackle.

    Phai, seeing the creature lash out at her companions, if somewhat ineffectively so, unleashed 2 more arrows at it, one of them burrowing itself in the creature and doing some damage despite missing the vital spot she aimed for, keeping her grip on the glaive firm and glancing over to the door for moments while drawing the arrows, not enjoying the prospect of being surprised by more Klaven while they were busy with THIS thing.

    Vincent's Bolas strike missed - Isen, on the other hand, drew a quick attack as the creature lashed out while it could.

    It wasn't able to stop the spell, though, and his blast hit it squarely. Phai landed one shot a moment later, alongside Child's blast-

    -which wasn't quite able to do full damage. It was looking badly hurt now, and a few of its tendrils waved slightly - then it simply vanished, having turned invisible.

    Child shrugged, dismissed the archmage spirit, and stood up, summoning his offensive armor. And that's my full action. AC goes back to 18.

    Seeing the greased area Vincent caused, Phai is not certain the creature actually moved, rather than simply turning itself invisible.

    She lets another arrow fly at where it was moments before, and yet another, either slightly in the direction of any smear marks the grease seemed to have, or a wild guess of "closer to the cylinder"(10 feet south).

    Isen's eyes flickered over the ceiling. He also used his Ward Hex, increasing Child's defenses for a while.

    Vincent's scan doesn't detect anything - and Phai's arrows bounced off of the ceiling, having failed to hit anything. Even as they fall, though, she's hard at work recalling information.

    [spoiler=Phai]Things are finally coming back to you - and the creature looked a Cerebric Fungi, an intelligent alien plant. Notably, though, most such creatures have limited arcane powers, and certainly nothing like the one here displayed. Whatever its capabilities are, it's definitely not a typical member of its kind.

    "It's a...plant...a fungus of sorts. I read about these. But it's different, somehow.", Phai states, scanning the area, before moving to close the door.
    Unless it teleports, too, we'll at least know roughly where it is, and won't have to deal with another ambush on the way out. Well, no ambush by THAT thing.

    Just a verification: the glass cylinder thing in the middle is connected to something top and bottom, and the only "entrance" is the door to the east, that is, facing the main entrance to the room. There's no holes or anything the fungus could use to get inside?

    (Assuming the fungus did nothing this round), Child moved to the glass dome, tapping it with his sword hilt before moving his mouth close to the surface. "Can you hear me?" he called out at the creature inside.

    Isen glanced at the ceiling and shrugged. "More likely, it's simply invisible." The Witch placed another barrier to protect them when the thing decided to reappeared, and readied dropping it once they could see it.

    The creature inside the cage was blurred to begin with given the thickness of the glass - and while they seemed aware of Child's approach, there was no sign that they could hear the Suli.

    A few moments later, the creature reappeared by the western wall, and sent a barrage of Magic Missiles around Isen's barrier and towards Phai. Fortunately, they didn't seem to be infused with whatever power had toppled you earlier...

    Sighing, Isen allowed the barrier to disapate and threw another bolt of force at the thing. Something had to kill it.

    Spirits flowing out of his body, Child found himself moving more slowly. And so, frowning, he drew his shield, and peppered the re-visible tentacle thing with a half-hearted spell.

    His thought became reality, and a blast of frigid water crashed into the creature, hopefully strong enough to dislodge it from the ceiling.

    I'm a bit unclear about how the thing is staying on the ceiling. Since it wasn't affected by the grease, I'm assuming it's just holding onto something so I'm hoping a hydraulic push might be able to knock it down? If it obviously wouldn't be affected, can we change it to a ear piercing scream (DC 14 Fort) instead? If hydraulic push does work, I'll move up next to it, stowing my wand and drawing my falcata on the way so I can threaten it.

    With the missiles arcing around the cylinder, it seemed pretty clear the creature was on the other side of it, using some uncanny sense to target her without seeing her.
    She could not do the same with her arrows, but she could move closer and get a shot in.
    Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 17 Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6
    A flick shot uncertain to hit, certainly, but still better than sitting idly.
    In other news, I just learned shaman has neither Faerie Fire nor Glitterdust on their spell list, nor, of course, see invisibility or invisibility purge. I assume that part will need to be covered by someone else.


    Not everything creatures do is obvious. Phai, would you like to Surge that roll? It will definitely hit if you do. ...And take the enemy down. XD

    Isen's bolt struck the creature as it hung from the ceiling - and both Child and Vincent hit it with water (which didn't seem to bother it much, actually - but then, plant). Phai's arrow was a different story as she reached within and focused... and the shot veered left at the last moment. Instead of scraping past, it sunk deep into the creature's body... and the alien entity dropped to the ground with a heavy thud.

    As soon as the thing was down, Child moved back to the door in the glass enclosure. "Right, then—anybody have an objection to me trying to open this, or failing that, punch through the glass?"

    "Yes, I have an objection. You, me and Vincent are hurt. Let Isen try the door, and let me tend to your wounds.", Phai states, still breathing heavily and intend to take a closer look at the Fungus to make sure it would STAY down.
    But before that, she extended her healing touch in alphabetical order:
    Healing Hex Child: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
    Healing Hex Phai: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
    Healing Hex Vincent: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

    Thats assuming we have the time right now, if we are still round-based I would simple do it over the next few rounds unless a reason not to presents itself.

    Well that healing's a bit overkill, but sure. Child will move to the door after being healed but wait for the rest of the party to collect themselves.

    Overkill? Your statline said 33/43 before...with +11 that 1 point overheal and you should be full. It may not have been inmediately necessary for either of you, but there's no real utility in saving healing hex use, either, as it's once per person per day anyway.

    Moving up to the door, Isen considered it - and whether it might be trapped.

    The lock on the eastern side didn't so much as budge - as Isen tried it, a few scans revealed that it seemed to have been Arcane Locked, and wasn't going to budge so easily. Noticing your attempts, the figure on the inside slowly started drawing with their finger on the inside of the glass, spelling out 'Key' before pointing south.

    But an Arcane Lock only protects doors, not neighboring walls...

    Child stepped five feet to the side, and tapped on a featureless pane of glass. 'Smash?' he attempted to spell out.

    "Well... Should we look for the key? If this is normal glass—or really, any material no tougher than steel—I should be able to smash through it, but I don't know anything about this tech."

    "You seem irritatingly keen on smashing through obstacles in your way. Bursting glass tends to shatter quite violently. I would prefer not inflicting unnecessary damage to our ward by cutting her with a shower of glass shards. How about you get to smash your way into whatever the other doors hide in the corridor, but we try to use a key here?", Phai cautiously suggests, seemingly unsure if it's a cultural thing with Child or one of the personalities that try to force him to destroy and shatter walls and obstacles.

    When Child-of-Planes spelled 'smash', the figure quickly retreated to the far side, apparently having no interest in being close by if someone decided to start hitting it.

    "Hopefully this place won't be too dangerous," Isen commented thoughtfully, "But somehow I doubt it. If Child is worn down, we'll need to be a tad more cautious, but my own resources are holding up well...for now." The Rogue backed off the door for now. If he couldn't pick it, the door was likely a better option.
